Dear Popcorn, You Must Go.

We bought our house a little over a year ago, and it has been non-stop projects since day one. DIY all the way. But first, a little background.

Our house was rented for about 12 years before we bought it. The owners lived out of state and didn't quite keep up with it. The carpet was stained, the kitchen was caked in grease, and everything was covered in dust. A real charmer. Lucky(?) for us, we're not he House Hunters "move-in-ready" type. When we looked at the house, we saw nothing but opportunity.

If a few years of renovations were in my future, I needed a peaceful place to escape. Our very first task was getting the master bedroom up to par. This entailed removing the popcorn ceiling, painting - walls, ceiling & trim, replacing the doors, and replacing the light fixture. Doesn't seem like too bad of a list. But here's what we were working with.

What's that you ask? Were the renters UT fans? How did you know?! In fact, the key we got even had a Texas Longhorn on it. One of the guest bedrooms is the same color. It unfortunately, has not yet been painted. And don't worry, those curtains are not maroon; they are brown. I'm sure maroon was not allowed anywhere in this house.

The popcorn ceilings would be our first conquest. We watched about a gazillion YouTube videos that all said it would be easy. It wasn't easy. Especially when you're working full time and this is an evenings only project. Why do we want so badly to be grownups?

We taped up all the walls and the floors, and the dust was still everywhere when we finished! Our vinegar/water mix seemed to be no help at all. It mostly just dripped off instead of soaking in. Oh well, it got done. And it looks great! It took us about a week's worth of evenings to get everything scraped off, the uneven areas smoothed out, and the primer put on. All in all, I really shouldn't complain. It looks great now!

So, what's left to do?

Install crown molding, replace the carpet, put a knob on the closet door (betcha didn't even notice it was missing), and get some art on the walls. But all that will have to wait, because we've moved on to much more important projects like tiling bathrooms and staining cabinets … just wait till you see!

With love,
Paige
